5034MAA Analytical Modelling
Finite Element Analysis Coursework: 2022-23: Sem1
PLEASE READ THIS DOCUMENT CAREFULLY. THIS DOCUMENT
CONTAINS IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE
COURSEWORK TASKS, DELIVERABLES, SUBMISSION AND
ASSESSMENT.
§1.0 Aim & Outcomes
The purpose of this coursework is to give you hands-on experience using professional finite
element analysis (FEA) software. For this task you will be given a problem to solve
investigate.
1. Demonstrate the ability to extract data pertinent to an unfamiliar problem, and
apply its solution using computer based engineering tools when appropriate.
2. Appraise and understand the capabilities of computer based models for solving
problems in engineering, and assess the limitations of particular cases.
This project will be formally introduced in 5034MAA lectures where the aims, objectives and
assessment brief will be described and discussed. However, we strongly advise that you
START THE COURSEWORK NOW. It is important for you to attend all lectures and tutorials
where you will be able to discuss and review your progress and seek feedback, advice and
clarification.
This is an individual coursework. The work that you submit must be your own. Plagiarism
and collusion will be dealt with very strictly in accordance with the University Rules and
Regulations.
§2.0 Assessment
For this coursework we would like you to construct a model of a truss frame using a Finite
Element Anaylsis (FEA) package, analyse its behaviour and compare your results with
theoretical analysis (i.e. hand calculations).
§2.1 Truss Frame
Figure 1 shows a truss frame. The frame consists of the elements shown. All the elements
have the same length of 2000 mm and same material properties and these are listed in Table
1 . The frame is supported by one roller and one fixed support and is loaded with a
concentrated forces of 6 kN and 12 kN, as shown in figure 1.
Young’s Modulus, E E=210 GPa
Poisson ratio, ν ν =0.3
Diameter of circular profile, d d=10mm
Length L for each truss element 2000 mm

facultyregistry.eec@coventry.ac.uk.
. You will need to do the following:
1. Construct an FEA model which allows you to investigate the behaviour of the truss.
It is expected that your FEA model will allow you to calculate the following:
• Displacements for all nodes;
• Forces for all nodes;
• Forces in all elements;
• Reaction at supports; and,
• Stress in all elements.
2. Construct an FEA mathematical model which allows you to investigate the
behaviour of the truss. It is expected that your model will allow you to calculate the
Displacement and forces at the nodes. Please state your equilibrium equation.
3. You will need to analyse the behaviour of your models and compare this with an
appropriate theoretical method.
4. What additional elements could you add or remove to improve the structural
integrity? Please support your claims.
More details can be found in Table 2. You may use any FEA software you wish. We
strongly recommend that you use ANSYS or ABAQUS to construct your FEA model. We will
be able to provide you with any queries you may have during the tutorials and theta
sessions. You can download ANSYS or ABAQUS on the University PCs using AppsAnywhere.
Alternatively you can download a student copy for your own laptops via the ABAQUS
website.
You can use any coding software you wish for your mathematical model. You can obtain
access to MATLAB, Python, C++ and MS Excel on the University PCs.

§3.0 Submission & Assessment Criteria
Please ensure you:
• Present your findings in a Professional Technical Report submitted as a pdf file;
• Your report should not exceed 5 A4 pages. This does not include your title page
and Appendix (coding transcript).
• Do not include a contents page.
• Include one Appendix which should include an annotated transcript of your code
and your equilibrium equation which you should refer to in your main text.
• You should number and provide captions for your Headings, Figures and Tables
appropriately. You should reference any journals and texts using APA referencing
style.
Please also remember to:
• Submit your work electronically as a pdf file. We do not accept submission via
email.
• Please ensure you check your work carefully and submit the correct file.
• Your submission must be your own work. This is an individual coursework. The
work that you submit must be your own. Plagiarism and collusion will be dealt with
very strictly in accordance with the University Rules and Regulations.
• Submit your report by 18:00 on the day of the deadline electronically using Aula.
Please submit on time, as one second after the deadline will result in a zero mark.
Table 2 shows the assessment criteria for your submission. Please use this as a basic guide
to structure your report. This assessment is marked out of 100 and represents 33.3% of the
total mark for 5034MAA. Your score is calculated based on the combination of marks set out
in Table 2. Please note that the marks for each component also include the QUALITY of your
submission. This includes the use of appropriate technical language, quality of figures and
tables. Think carefully about how you present and describe your results.
A
Please note that the manner in which you present and describe your results, findings,
descriptions, comparisons and arguments take precedent. You may have calculated the
items required, but if you have not shown sufficient understanding and depth of
knowledge you may not achieve full credit.
Please be aware that your assessor will be looking to see that you have fulfilled the
requirements of the task. You will be assessed according to the learning outcomes outlined.
You must show that you have understood the Engineering and Mathematical science and
analysis. Importantly, you will have demonstrated the important skills that are expected
from a Professional Engineer through the use of the software, analysis and your own
technical submissions.
