The final project is an argumentative research essay answering a question of judgment (not facts) on the
intersection of a technology and one aspect of a specific society (history, politics, geography, literature,
ethics, law, etc.) (minimum length 1750 words (excluding bibliography and footnotes)).
You can write on the post-1800 impact of any technology.
Your paper should be written for a general audience, i.e., for a group of intelligent readers who do not
know much about the question you are exploring. You will have to give them the background information
they will need to understand the issue at stake and offer your own perspective on the question. You will
need to cite any claim that is not considered common knowledge for such an audience.
Your position should be clearly stated in your introduction and defended with strong arguments supported
by convincing and reliable evidence. Your essay should also closely examine the strongest objections to
your position. In other words, you want to clearly explain a specific and complex problem, explore
possible solutions to it, and explain why you think your own answer is the best one, despite its own
weaknesses and the advantages other options may offer.
