Targeting Employers to Contact
Having defined yourself as a product and having developed promotional literature required by the employer community, it’s time to set goals for your career. This exercise will force you to think about where you want to work after you graduate, and why you are making this choice.
Identify Your Targets
Industry
Write a brief paragraph (3-5 concise sentences) defining your choice of industry (e.g., services, products, nonprofit, government, etc.) and the customers you want to serve (consumers, businesses, causes) following college. Please explain why these two choices are right for you.
Location
Write a brief paragraph defining the jobsite in which you most want to work (e.g., Los Angeles area, out of LA area, abroad, your own home, etc.). Please be specific and explain why you have chosen this geography in which to start your career.
Ownership
Write a brief paragraph defining the ownership of the company for which you want to work. When you consider the company you want to work for or be a part of, is this a public company/corporation owned by shareholders or a small to medium-sized business where the owners are onsite with employees, etc.? Those are just two examples. There are many other types of ownership situations.
Five Specific Companies
List the names and addresses of five (5) prominent companies meeting the criteria you’ve set in parts 1-3 (above). If your immediate goal is to start your own company, list the 5 most important steps you will take to do so.
