Your grade is based upon five criterions: strength of argument, support for arguments, clarity of thought, clarity of writing, and precision of response.

The following suggestions are intended only as general guidelines; there are undoubtedly many different ways to prepare a successful book essay. First, remember that you are writing an essay. You need to include an introduction and conclusion along with the body of the paper. All the usual rules of spelling, grammar, and punctuation apply here. Your introduction should provide short answers to the questions mentioned above. What issues does Deloria address in this book? How does he propose to rectify those issues in 1969? Do not merely describe what you tell the reader in your paper. Rather, tell the reader your argument.

The body of the paper should summarize the book in greater detail. You do not need to reproduce the narrative of the book; in fact you probably want to avoid a chapter-by-chapter summary. I have already read the book. More than once. This section of the paper can be structured in a number of different ways, but you want to make certain that you cover the central themes enunciated in your introductory paragraph. You need to address the principal questions in the assignment: What are the principal issues facing American Indians in 1969? How does Deloria propose to solve them? Finally, you need to offer a concluding paragraph that briefly restates your arguments about the book and your assessment of its content. But you want to go a bit further here; your conclusion should not be a mirror image of your introduction. Instead, you should provide an analysis of Deloria’s arguments.

There is no need to consult a source beyond Custer Died for Your Sins or, if applicable, Native America or Major Problems in American Indian History.
