How Institutional Racism in the UK Effects Football. Why Does it Persist despite legislation?
Introduction
This paper aims to examine institutional racism in the UK, and how it affects football in the UK specifically at a professional level. As ex BBC pundit, Craig Rampage put it: “When I look at certain players,” Ramage judged, “their body language, their stance, the way they act, you just feel, hold on a minute, he needs pulling down a peg or two So I’d probably say that about all the young black lads …” (Hyde,2020). A very recent and clear example of racial prejudice on players at a professional level broadcasted on a live radio show. What we can deduct from this statement from Craig Rampage is two things: The first being, how can I famous broadcaster say a racist statement so comfortably with seemingly no consideration and secondly, if the BBC, who are the largest and oldest broadcasting corporation in the UK, can employ an individual with such views, what views do ordinary citizens in British society hold? Two questions that will inadvertently be answered in this paper.
This paper shall display the way in which racism in the UK in general, directly correlates with racism in the sport and how it affects the sport. Ultimately by answering the first part of the research we will be able to gain an insight as to why it continues despite legislation, which is the second part of the question. Furthermore, there will be sub-questions that shall be addressed whilst the research is carried out, such as “How does the current political climate fuel racism in the UK?” and “How the decades of embedded racism in the UK affects professional football today?” amongst other sub-questions that shall be answered. By answering such questions, it will enable us to understand the factors which contribute to racism in the UK and therefore racism in football at a professional level.
