MICROECONOMIC JOURNAL

(worth 100 points)

Due date: April 27, 2020

Topic: Keep a “Micro Journal” with two opposing themes: 1) viewing the economy through a profit maximization lens and 2) viewing the economy through a “social business” lens. Update your journal throughout the semester so you can fulfill the requirements below by April 27, 2020.

Requirements:

Read articles or a book (newspaper or magazine articles, not personal opinion blogs) about business practices that support the profit-maximizing principles we have studied in microeconomics. Write a 1-2 page (double spaced) summary of what you read. Note: Video documentaries are also an acceptable source but cannot be the only source. This will be section one of your paper and will be worth 30 points.

Read articles or a book (newspaper or magazine articles, not personal opinion blogs) about “social business” practices (practices that focus on objectives beyond making profits). Social businesses are businesses created to solve a social problem. Write a 2-3 page (double spaced) summary of what you read. Note: Video documentaries are also an acceptable source but cannot be the only source. This will be section two of your paper and will be worth another 30 points.

Write a 1-2 page (double spaced) summary of the differences between a business based on profit-maximization and one based on solving a social problem (a “social business”). This will be section three of your paper and will be worth another 20 points.

Possible reference sources:

C-Span (www.c-span.org).
Books: Banker to the Poor: Micro-Lending and the Battle Against World Poverty, Dr. Muhammad Yunus; Building Social Business: The New Kind of Capitalism that Serves Humanity’s Most Pressing Needs, Dr. Muhammad Yunus; Conscious Capitalism, John Mackey and Rajendra Sisodia
Other original sources that you may find. (“Original” source means you are not reading someone’s interpretation or opinion of a book or article; instead, you are reading the book or article yourself.)

Notes:

A minimum of 5 sources is required.

Combine the three sections described above into one paper composed of the three different sections. This will result in a 4-7 page double-spaced paper. You must cite your sources within the body of your text as well as include a bibliography at the end of your paper. Any format is ok. Click on the Reference tab on the ribbon bar in Microsoft Word and select a format. The software will prepare the bibliography for you. Please use Microsoft Word. Do not convert your paper to a pdf file.

Correct spelling and grammar is required.

All writings must be in your own words. Plagiarism detection software will be used as part of the grading process. An Originality Report will be created automatically. Part of the Originality Report is the calculation of a Similarity Index. If your Similarity Index is greater than 20%, you will receive an F on your paper. A Similarity Index greater than 20% means you have copied more than 20% of your paper and not given credit to the authors from which you got the content. All sources quoted must be enclosed in quotation marks and explicitly cited.
