Modified Historical Investigation (HI) Essay

For your modified historical investigation assignment, you will be writing a 4 paragraph, persuasive essay answering the prompt that I gave you at the beginning of spring semester: How did American involvement in _____________________________ impact that country socially, politically, economically, and/or environmentally? [Choose only 2 scope areas]. The country and time period that you write about will be the same as what you chose a few months ago, however, because I did not get a chance to support you as much as I wanted in the research process (blame the global pandemic, not me…), I am going to change the requirements. The new requirements are as follows:

• The paper will no longer be in sections. You are not going to spend the first portion of your paper analyzing your main source, nor are you going to finish your paper with a reflection. Disregard the instruction packet I gave you at the beginning of the semester (unless pieces are helpful for you), and instead, use these bullet points for the assignment.
• You need to use 3-4 different sources for your paper instead of 4-6, however, we are not going to focus as much on a “main source” now. Your 3-4 sources must be reliable (ie: not Wikipedia…), but now you can use general historical sites like history.com or others that compile information in general summary form. The information on these sites may or may not have an individual author, but as long as the site is legitimate, the source is fine. I am less concerned about your analysis of the sources themselves now. I’m looking for an essay that shows that you did research, understand the subject matter, and can relay that in an organized way.
• There is no specific word requirement now. However, write the best 4 paragraph essay you can write. The paper should contain an introduction that ends with a thesis, 2 body paragraphs and a conclusion. I would expect a 3-5 page, double spaced essay when you are finished.
• Per the original requirements, pick 2 scope areas (social, political, economic and/or environmental) on which you will focus. Those will be your two body paragraphs.
• When you cite your evidence, provide a combination of quoted and paraphrased information from the sources you find.
• The citation and formatting requirements are the same. See the next page of this document for those requirements.
• You can still use EBSCO for your research if that helps you. I received an email from our librarian, Mrs. Whitthead, who wrote, “EBSCO Search is still accessible but students and teachers will need the log in information which is Username: lagunacreek password: Cardinal$25 All of the databases within EBSCO will still be accessible.”

Although the requirements are different, I expect focus and hard work on this paper. I know you all well enough to know that you are capable of high quality research and writing, and I will be grading you with those high expectations in mind. I will post support documents as needed as the weeks progress, so check frequently for that information. This paper is due May 14th. Good luck!
