For this first assignment, you will write about one theme that is relevant to at least three authors on our syllabus. One of those three must be an author of one of our novels.
Yes, there is a lot of freedom in this assignment. I am not necessarily looking for a standard research paper. This is your essay.
A minimum of two additional sources is required.
This essay will be 5-6 pages for undergrads
Unfortunately, I have to add this: resist any temptation you might have to plagiarize. I know this temptation may be there with such an open topic, but resist. Do not let the stress of the semester lead you into a bad decision.
Cite all sources.
Please direct questions/comments/thoughts to the forum below.
One piece of advice: narrow your topic down. When I say “one theme,” and you think, for example, religion. See if you can narrow that down to … religion as justification for slavery or Christian religion depicted as hypocritical or the slaveowners misunderstanding of Christianity.
The more specific, the better. Big topics tend to become too general. Instead, we want to get into the details of a theme.
Read Harriet Jacobs: Life of a Slave Girl, Toni Morrison: A Mercy , and SoJourner Truth: Aint I A women and talk about the female slaves relations with the white men, the females having kids for their masters, and the way they’re being treated by their slave masters.
