Please describe and analyse a four- to five-minute continuous sequence of the film, Berlin, Symphony of a Great City (1927, Ruttmann), using film analysis
tools. Through your analysis, you should try to answer the questions: How does the Ruttmann depict the modern city? From whose perspective?
In this assignment, you must define the five main film analysis tools (editing, cinematography, shot, mise en scéne and sound) in your own words. Be sure to
cite all sources for your definitions! Any quoted materials must have correct citations also (including quotation marks, author name, publication year, and
page number). This assignment should be 600-800 words (not including title and bibliography) and include in-text citations and a bibliography using The
Reference Guide for formatting.
In your introduction, be sure to indicate what sequence (using hour:min:sec) you will analyse for the assignment. You may select your own sequence (with at
least three edits and for at least four but no more than ten continuous minutes, depending on the sequence). Still not sure? I will provide some sample time
options in Week 2. NOTE: Please do not use the opening sequence which we will discuss in class in Week 2.
At the top of your Assignment 1, include your name, student id number, a TurnItIn percentage check score, word count, and title.
Save the file using your LastFirstname_GY339Assn1 in the title of the word document (e.g.: TillKaren_GY339Assn1.docx).
Assignment 1 must be uploaded in the designated TurnItIn folder on Moodle by Monday, 18 October, 11:59pm.
