Course Design Template
Course Title: Introduction to Sociology
Course Description: The course will offer an introduction to the field of sociology with a focus on introductory theories, concepts, and methods applied in modern society (North Idaho College, 2020). It offers a basic understanding of critical concepts and applies scientific methodology to study society.
Course Type (traditional or online): Traditional
Learning Outcomes:
1. Learners can explore and explain human behavior at different stages of society.
2. Students will gain a sociological toolkit critical for comprehending themselves and their society.
3. The class will teach students to recognize social and individual structures that connect self and society.

Topic 1: Introduction to sociology
Objective 1 Define society-related concepts and social facts. At the end of the course, learners will explain and define different sociological concepts.
Objective 2 Apply sociological concepts in expressing their empirical observations in their social environment (Anadolu University, 2022).
Objective 3 Demonstrate a grasp of different sociological theories and utilize them in explaining social situations or phenomena.

Topic 2: The Nature of Sociology
Objective 1 Evaluate how organizations, institutions, and social structures influence societies and individuals.
Objective 2 Demonstrate the ability to evaluate the consequences and causes of social unrest and social movements
Objective 3 Engage in understanding and investigating the value and function of research toward improving and understanding social conditions (GCU, 2017). The learner will engage in an analysis of the ethical outcomes of social practice and research.

Topic 3: Methods of sociological research
Objective 1 Examine the application of qualitative and quantitative research approaches in sociology. They will have a basic comprehension of the scientific perspective of research.
Objective 2 Analyze various pitfalls and strengths of various research strategies while studying effective approaches for critically examining research results’ validity.
Objective 3 Acknowledge the significance of data analysis and research design in sociology. It will highlight the relevance of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Topic 4: Social Structure and social interaction
Objective 1 Examine the influence of social norms on group interactions and individual behavior. It will also inform on the interactions of social structure and culture.
Objective 2 Evaluate the role of authority and power in social interactions while identifying the different aspects of social stratification and their influence (Anadolu University, 2022).
Objective 3 Distinguish the various informal and formal social structures. They will study the impact of social networks and media on the group and individual interaction.

Topic 5: Socialization
Objective 1 Establish the influence of media, school, peers, and family on the socialization process. Learners will examine the various theoretical perspectives and their implications for culture and behavior (GCU, 2017).
Objective 2 Examine the impact of socialization on identity formation and gender roles and discuss its effects on attitudes, values, and social norms.
Objective 3 Identify and explain the use of different strategies to initiate positive outcomes of the socialization process. Learners will be able to explore the outcomes of socialization for economic and social inequality.

Topic 6: Culture
Objective 1 Identify and evaluate the influence of cultural values and norms on social conduct and the creation and maintenance of social stratification.
Objective 2 Study the use of communication and language in shaping cultural identity and investigate religion’s role and other belief systems’ influence on cultural values.
Objective 3 Evaluate the relationship between economic development and culture while examining the influence of cultural diversity on social integration and collaboration.

Summative Assessment/Course Outcome
Students will define social concepts and facts. By the end of the course, students will be able to explain and define various sociological concepts. The student will be able to evaluate or examine how organizations, institutions, and social structures influence societies and individuals (GCU, 2017). The student will be able to investigate the use of qualitative and quantitative research approaches in sociology. The student will be able to investigate the impact of social norms on group interactions and individual behavior. It will also provide information on the interactions between social structure and culture. Determine the impact of the media, school, peers, and family on the socialization process. Students will investigate different theoretical perspectives and their implications for culture and behavior. Determine and assess the impact of cultural values and norms on social behavior.
