Question 1.

The first column in the Table below lists some important Biomolecules that can be grouped into three different Biochemical classes. Each Biomolecule has a distinctive structural arrangement and a specific Biological Function. Use your understanding of the structure and function of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids to complete the Table.

Biomolecule State the Biomolecule’s Class (Either Carbohydrate, Protein or Lipid) Provide a Description of the Biomolecule’s Structure. Provide a Description of the Biomolecule’s function.
Enzyme

Glucose

Triglyceride

Phospholipid

Question 2.

a) Diagram A is a monomer that functions as a building block for much larger structures within the body.

i) State the name of Structure A

b) The diagram below illustrates the resulting product when 2 molecules of structure A have been bonded together in a condensation reaction.

i) Name bond X

c) During the process of protein synthesis many molecules of structure A are bonded together to create the protein’s primary structure.

i) Describe the primary structure of a protein.

ii) Describe the Tertiary structure of a protein and describe the biological function of a named example.

Question 3.

Monosaccharides and disaccharides are two of the sub-classes of Carbohydrates. Molecule B shown below is a specific example of a monosaccharide.

i) Name Molecule B.

ii) Describe the structure of a disaccharide that contains this molecule.

iii) Give a named example of a polysaccharide that would only contain this molecule and describe its biological function.

LEARNING OUTCOMES (LOs) ASSESSMENT CRITERIA (ACs)
The student should be able to: The student has achieved the learning outcomes because s/he can: Page number/s where you have achieved this AC:
1 Demonstrate an understanding of the structure and function of major macromolecules 1.1 Describe, using examples, the role of major macromolecules and their importance in functioning of the cell. This is also assessed in the exam

2 Demonstrate an understanding of simple Mendelian inheritance mechanisms 2.1 Describe the key aspects of inheritance determined by chromosomal genes
3 Demonstrate an understanding of the process of cellular respiration 3.1 Describe key aspects of the biochemistry of cellular respiration

There are some phrases that you may not be familiar with when answering TAQs or trying to match your answers with assessment criteria. Here are some helpful tips:
To demonstrate Provide several relevant examples of appropriate evidence that supports the arguments you are making. It can also mean to show the results practically.
To describe Give an account of the properties of something, its features or characteristics, or how it looks / smells so as to provide an accurate description of it.
To explain To say how and/or why something occurs and setting out its meaning in detail (with reasons) to make it more understandable. To give an example of what you mean, start with the topic and then give the ‘how’ or ‘why’.
