Guideline Critique: INSTRUCTIONS
The use of screening tests in clinical practice is one of the most important overlaps of epidemiology and nursing. Having a thorough understanding of the concepts behind screening tests is important for you as you evaluate how good a screening test is and whether or not you should use it in your patient population.
Think about how screening tests are used in your area of practice. Choose one screening test of interest to you. Find a peer-reviewed publication(s) that studied the application of the screening test and the evidence-based guidelines that support its use in clinical practice. You may use any reference(s) you wish as long as it is peer-reviewed and cited in PubMed or CINAHL. The reference(s) you select must include an estimate of the screening test’s sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value (if applicable).
Write a synopsis of your findings in no more than 3 pages double-spaced (and of course, follow proper APA format) to address:
1. Describe the screening test and the disease for which it is used. (5 points)
2. Can the disease for which the screening test is being used be detected early in its development? (5 points)
3. State the sensitivity and specificity of the screening test. In your own words, how do you interpret the sensitivity and specificity? Practically speaking, what do they mean? (20 points)
4. How serious is the problem of false-positive test results with this screening test? (10 points)
5. What is the cost of early detection in terms of expenditures, clinical or other resources, and emotional impact on the patient? (20 points)
6. Can patients be harmed by the screening test, and if so, how? (15 points)
7. Do the individuals in whom disease is detected early benefit from the early detection, and is there an overall benefit to those who are screened? (10 points)
8. Having critically evaluated this screening test, would you use it in your clinical practice? Support your answer. (10 points)
9. Grammar/ APA use (5 points)
