African Art in Senegal (1960-1970s)

This research paper aims to explore the history of artists in Senegal during the 1960s and
1970s, a period marked by significant political and cultural changes in the country. Senegal
gained independence from French colonial rule in 1960, leading to a surge of artistic expression
and cultural revival. This paper will delve into their contributions to the cultural landscape of
Senegal during this quickly changing era. I plan on talking about the emergence of the École de
Dakar, a well known art school that played a pivotal role in promoting local artistic talent. Also
the paper will investigate the influence of political ideologies, such as Negritude and
Pan-Africanism, on the artistic themes of Senegalese artists. Additionally, it will explore the
impact of exhibitions, festivals, and collaborations on the visibility and recognition of Senegalese
artists both within the country and on the global stage. By examining different sources; some
primary sources, including artworks, and interviews, but mainly secondary sources, this
research paper should provide historical context to artistic movements and showcase notable
artists that shaped the vibrant art scene in Senegal during the 1960s and 1970s.
