2.2 Assessment Details
Summative Assessment 1: Critical review of two articles
The first assignment assesses learning outcomes 1 and 2 and will give students the opportunity to:
• demonstrate their skills of close analytical reading;
• demonstrate their ability to produce a nuanced and in-depth understanding of an individual academic article;
• show their understanding of a range of critiques and how to apply them to individual academic articles; and
• demonstrate an ability to produce a coherent and balanced critique of an academic article.
The Task
You are required to produce a critical review of two critiques (of not more than 750 words each) of the articles provided by your tutor. Each critique should be of a different academic article and apply a different mode of critique i.e. each article will be predominantly critiqued using either an ideological/ethical, theoretical, or methodological critique (though you will not be able to critique the article used in the formative assessment, or use the same kind of critique). Although you will be expected to evidence your argument by referring to relevant reading, the emphasis in this assessment is on critically evaluating the specific articles using the techniques discussed in lectures and seminars rather than introducing different viewpoints.
.
Please include the two reviews in one document for submission
Summative Assessment 1 – Critical review of two articles
The critiques of the two articles will be assessed against the following criteria:
1. The ability to demonstrate a clear understanding of the article by using your own words. 2. The ability to apply two of the three types of criticism: ideological, theoretical, and
methodological, appropriately.
3. The ability to produce a reasoned, coherent and consistent argument.
In addition, your work will be assessed against three generic criteria: structure, expression, and referencing.
