Introduction
In the international literature, active learning approaches to health professions education has recently been seen to replace
the more traditional methods of learning. The aim of active learning for health care professionals is to provide opportunities for
learners to think critically about content through a range of learning activities that help prepare them for the challenges of clinical
work. In preparation for facilitation of active learning, the teacher needs to be able to demonstrate knowledge of the theories,
concepts and principles that underpin active learning.
This assessment item is the first step in your preparation as a contemporary health professions educator, who facilitates learning
through active engagement. During week 1 you will learn about the context of health professional education, along with some
contemporary issues related to teaching and learning within healthcare. In week 2 you will explore the attributes of a number of
educational theories that relate to active learning. Consideration of the knowledge you gain over these weeks should provide
a foundation for this assignment task.
Details of task:
1. Undertake a literature search and critique of contemporary health professions education and practice (e.g. MOOCs,
interprofessional learning, clinical placements, simulation, digital health literacy). Include a search strategy (key search terms,
databases, timeframe etc). A minimum of 12 articles is required.
2. Discuss the educational theories of learning and teaching and justify WHY that particular learning theory informs an active
learning approach. Your discussion ONLY relates to theories of learning & teaching on active learning.
3. Choose an education context (Hospital, community, university) and a learner group who will be the recipients of an
education session (for example: hand hygiene for 1 year nursing students, professional development/in-service education for
emergency nursing staff on Sepsis, an in-situ simulation at your hospital to introduce new ventilation equipment to staff or
teamwork & communication for multidisciplinary MET team).
4. Describe the advantages of utilising an active learning approach for the educational context and health care professional
group (learners) you have selected above and rationalise your answer.
5. Explore the considerations that must be taken into account in order to achieve active learning engagement during your
education session (for example time, space, learning activity).
